A delegation from Kagadi District Local Government visited Bulindi ZARDI on January 24, 2024, to learn about innovative agricultural technologies and foster collaboration in technology transfer. Led by the Kagadi District Chairperson, Hon. Yosia Ndibwami, the team comprising both technical and political representatives was keen on understanding the latest production technologies on aquaculture, coffee, goats, banana, local chicken and pastures with potential to improve yields, food and nutrition security and wellbeing of people in the district.

The tour commenced with a comprehensive overview of innovative aquaculture practices, including pond siting, fertilisation techniques, and fish stocking strategies, provided by Mr. Ozuma Geoffrey, a Research Technician. Participants gained insights into fish feeding methods, water quality management, and predator control, essential for successful aquaculture ventures. At the banana research and demonstration site, Mr. Ekwangu Joseph, an Agronomist, discussed the importance of soil and water management for optimal banana yields.

Through practical demonstrations, attendees learned about the application of farmyard manure and mulching techniques to enhance soil fertility and moisture retention. Additionally, Mr. Kiggundu Andrew, a Banana Technician, elucidated the unique attributes of NARO banana hybrids, particularly emphasising their yield potential, aroma and resistance to major pests and diseases such as Nematodes, banana weevils and Black Sigatoka.

The visit also included observations at the screen house dedicated to the multiplication of clonal Kituuza Robusta coffee varieties and the goat improvement unit, where the breeding of Red Kalahari bucks with Mubende does for meat production is ongoing. As the learning visit came to a conclusion, Ms. Epodoi Pauline Opio, the Chief Administrative Officer of Kagadi District, encouraged participants to use the acquired knowledge to enhance existing agricultural practices or adopt new technologies. Hon. Yosia Ndibwami hailed Bulindi ZARDI as a centre of excellence in agricultural research and expressed intentions to facilitate similar visits for local farmers in the future.

I want to promise that we shall keep coming. Our focus is to see that these technologies can be promoted to our local farmers,” he said.

The commitment of Kagadi District leaders to promote agricultural innovations and knowledge sharing underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing food security and livelihoods within the region.
