The 3rd National Agricultural Education Show organised by Uganda National Farmers Federation (UNFFE), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and other partners, took place from June 24 to June 29, 2024, at the Jinja Show Grounds. The event focused on promoting knowledge and skills transfer among youth under the theme: “Young Innovations, Transforming Agriculture for National Prosperity”.

Participants included pupils and students from various educational institutions across Uganda, engaging in practical demonstrations, interactive training sessions, and competitions such as debates, poems, and policy dialogues. Addressing the gathering during the opening ceremony, Ms. Sharon Akullo, Vice President of UNFFE and a member of the NARO Governing Council, highlighted the significance of involving young people in Uganda’s future and transforming the agricultural sector, essential to the country’s economy.

She identified challenges faced by youths in agriculture, including limited access to land and finance, insufficient information, skills mismatch, and mind-set issues. The event also featured participation from several private companies, non -government organisations, government ministries, departments, and agencies, including NARO, showcasing products and services aimed at supporting youth in agriculture. Dr. Sadik Kassim, Deputy Director General of NARO for Agricultural Technology Promotion, emphasised President Museveni’s message during recent International Labour Day celebrations that Uganda has jobs but people lack vision and a positive attitude.

He encouraged young farmers to view challenges as opportunities for innovation and growth. The chief guest, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, represented by Mr. Darius Nandinda, Jinja’s Resident City Commissioner, praised UNFFE and partners for organising an impactful event and urged the National Council for Higher Education to prioritise science-based education. He underscored the importance of science and technology in national development, referencing the success of Asian economies and President Museveni’s advocacy for higher salaries for scientists.
