More than 1,000 farmers from across the Bunyoro region received practical, hands-on training in climate-smart agriculture at the Seeds of Gold Farm Clinic held on September 27, 2025, at BuZARDI in Hoima District. The highly anticipated event, organised by NARO in partnership with the Nation Media Group, was proudly sponsored by the Bank of Uganda, Pride Bank, Deposit Protection Fund, and LIONPRO Group.

Throughout the day, farmers gained valuable insights and skills in priority enterprises such as beekeeping, fish farming, goat rearing, piggery, coffee, maize, and poultry production. The clinic focused on empowering them to boost productivity, enhance sustainability, and build resilience to climate change. In her remarks, Ms. Kabatooro Monica, representing the Chairperson of BuZARDI’s Advisory Committee, reminded participants that they are the ultimate beneficiaries of agricultural research and urged them to approach farming as a business.

We [farmers] are the end-users of research and technologies. Some people have not yet realised that farming is a business.

Ms. Kabatooro Monica

But from today, based on what we’ve learnt and seen, go back, share this knowledge, and promote the value of farming in your communities.

Speaking on behalf of the Bank of Uganda, Ms. Ainembabazi Jean Marta, Credit Appraisal Officer, reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting smallholder farmers through
the Agricultural Credit Facility (ACF). She encouraged farmers to keep accurate farm records and provide appropriate collateral in order to access low-interest loans that can help expand and strengthen their enterprises.

Representing the Director General of NARO, Dr. Mwesigwa Moses noted that the training directly supports the National Development Plan Four (NDP IV), which prioritises agro-industrialisation as a key driver of economic growth. He emphasised that NDP IV aims for a tenfold increase in Uganda’s gross domestic product (GDP), urging farmers to embrace sustainable practices such as controlling soil erosion, improving soil fertility, and properly disposing of polythene waste to maximise yields.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Issa Hassan Byenkya, commended NARO for developing drought-and disease-tolerant, nutrient-rich crop varieties that support farmers in adapting to climate change. He noted that through agricultural transformation, the government seeks to achieve food and nutritional security, raise household incomes, and promote agro-industrialisation. Mr. Byenkya, who also serves as the District Production Officer for Kiryandongo, assured participants that the government is strengthening agricultural support systems by recruiting more extension officers to facilitate the transfer of improved technologies and provide on-the-ground assistance to farmers.
