Herbs and spices are not just mere ingredients, but a way of life worldwide. Known for their rich flavors, good aromas, and health benefits. Yet, beyond their culinary uses, these natural treasures hold much more potential, both for personal well-being and economic growth. Many of the herbs and spices have antioxidants and- anti-inflammatory compounds however, farmers who grow them are unable to fully capitalize on their value with many selling them as raw produce and at very low prices which means never enjoying the value of their produce while middlemen end up selling them at higher prices.
Despite the economic potential of herbs and spices, farmers often lack the knowledge, skills, and resources to transform their raw products into value-added goods that could fetch higher prices on the market.
MUZARDI scientists have therefore embarked on a journey to support these farmers and youths through knowledge sharing and innovative research as well as value addition. The fact that herbs have several health benefits makes them a key resource for people living with different diseases like diabetes and cancer yet the true economic value of herbs and spices remains untapped by the farmers who cultivate them.
Researchers believe that “herbs and spices are treasures,” that could be explored through value addition of products like tea, spice blends, and essential oils and developing spice blends. The journey of transforming herbs to valuable products is to empower youths and communities to unlock economic value, healthy living and sustainable growth.
As MUZARDI researchers focus on supporting farmers to reap the full potential of their labor, they have sought partnerships with existing herb and spice processors and producers to address key challenges in the value chain. In addition to that, a demonstration garden of more than 20 species was established for research innovations. The team hopes to carry out research on infusing oils with herbs for production of herbal skincare products, like turmeric face masks and lavender-scented balms.
