The 4th Eastern Agricultural Show, scheduled from February 26 to March 1, 2025, at Awoja Riverside in Soroti District, attracted approximately 350,000 farmers from the Teso sub-region during this four-day event aimed at promoting agricultural innovation.

With curiosity and excitment, participants engaged deeply with exhibitors, particularly those from the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), who displayed a range of nutrient-dense crops developed through years of research. These technologies aim to address Uganda’s nutritional needs while offering value addition opportunities for farmers and agribusinesses.

Among the standout exhibits from our crop institute, NaCRRI, were the purple-fleshed sweet potato and black rice, both rich in anthocyanins—powerful antioxidants linked to numerous health benefits. Also showcased was the highly nutritious orange maize, packed with provitamin A, and iron- and zinc-rich climbing beans, designed to combat malnutrition. The innovative crops sparked an enthusiastic exchange of knowledge,

Why is that potato purple?, What makes this rice black?, How is orange maize different from popcorn?

attendees eagerly asking

Dr. John Adriko, a NARO representative, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, This show offers a platform for community members to learn from one another. Participants should gain skills and ideas to create a consolidated effort that can truly transform the community, he said.

The event concluded with remarks from the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Soroti District, Paul Eseru, who applauded the participants for their engagement and pledged continued government support for exhibitions future.

Next year, we shall accommodate all districts around Teso with support for local content promotion. There will be better mobilization to ensure that more farmers benefit from research-driven solutions.

Mr. Paul Eseru, RDC Soroti District

With growing interest and participation, stakeholders are optimistic that future editions of the Eastern Agricultural Show will continue to drive progress in Uganda’s agricultural sector.
