Vice President Jessica Epel Alupo issued a powerful call to action for sustainable agriculture in Uganda, emphasizing its crucial role in achieving food security amidst the growing challenges of climate change.

Speaking at the 44th World Food Day celebrations, Alupo stressed the urgent need for farming practices that not only meet immediate food needs but also prioritize long-term sustainability. She highlighted the importance of:

Climate-smart agriculture: Adopting resilient practices and technologies to combat the impact of climate change on food production.
Nutritional security: Improving food safety standards and promoting nutrition-sensitive agriculture to combat malnutrition.
Collaborative action: Engaging all stakeholders – farmers, researchers, policymakers, and the private sector – in the pursuit of sustainable food systems.

The event, held at the National Semi-arid Resources Research Institute (NaSSARI), also marked the release of new climate-resilient varieties of groundnuts.

This underscores Uganda’s commitment to investing in research and innovation to support sustainable agriculture.

Alupo’s message echoes President Museveni’s call for a united front against climate change, with a focus on building a resilient and food-secure future for Uganda. The government’s commitment to sustainable agriculture is further evidenced by its aim to establish Uganda as a leader in agricultural technology for semi-arid regions.

This World Food Day, Uganda sends a clear message: sustainable agriculture is not just an option, but a necessity for a better life and a better future.
