Meet Professor Majalija Samuel, the new NaLIRRI Director of Research. Professor Majalija Samuel, NaLIRRI’s newly appointed Director of Research (DoR), assumed office on January 15, 2024, succeeding Dr. Swidiq Mugerwa. His appointment marks a new chapter in the institute’s journey towards global excellence in livestock research.
In his maiden speech, Prof. Majalija shared his commitment to elevating NaLIRRI and livestock research to unprecedented heights.
“I am very sure we are going to change much because we have the highest amount of grass per square meter in the world,” he declared. With a bold vision in mind, he pledged to transform NaLIRRI into a global center of excellence in livestock research, harnessing the abundant natural resources at their disposal.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Prof. Majalija emphasized the institute’s pivotal role in converting Uganda’s natural resources into tangible products such as beef, milk, and eggs. “We have a challenge as an institute to convert the natural resource we have into beef, milk and eggs,” he stated. As he assumes the role of DoR, Prof. Majalija expressed his gratitude to the NARO Governing Council for entrusting him with this significant responsibility.
Prof. Majalija envisions research outcomes reaching and benefiting communities at the grassroots level. By fostering stronger ties between research and local communities, he aims to ensure that the fruits of NaLIRRI’s labor directly impact those who need it most.
Recognizing the importance of accessibility, Prof. Majalija is committed to making research technologies affordable for all stakeholders. By reducing barriers to entry, he hopes to democratize access to cutting-edge research tools and innovations.
He understands the critical role of consistency in research endeavors. He pledges to maintain the availability of research technologies at all times, ensuring that researchers and practitioners have uninterrupted access to essential tools and resources.
With his leadership, the institute is poised to embark on a journey of unprecedented growth, bringing tangible benefits to communities and stakeholders alike.
Professor Majalija’s journey comes from a point of dedication and expertise in the field of veterinary education, research leadership, and management. Graduating from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in 1994, he continued his academic pursuits, earning a Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine in 1997. His academic journey culminated in a PhD in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (Microbiology) from the University of Cape Town in 2009.
Prof. Majalija’s carries a rich and diverse career spanning over 25 years. He has held academic appointments at Makerere University, progressing from a Teaching Assistant to Associate Professor in the Department of Biosecurity, Ecosystems & Veterinary Public Health. He has supervised numerous graduate students, mentored young researchers, and contributed extensively to research projects, garnering grants and publishing over 40 manuscripts in refereed journals. He has also held positions such as Deputy Principal at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity, Makerere University.
Prof. Majalija’s impact transcends national borders. He has managed international projects, including serving as the Country Focal Person/Program Manager for One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) in Uganda. Through these roles, he has facilitated strategic partnerships, workforce development, and community engagement initiatives across East and Central Africa.
His research outputs have contributed to national transformation, informing policy briefs and innovative solutions for livestock health and production. Prof. Majalija has been instrumental in institutional reforms, curriculum innovations, and the establishment of platforms for academic-community engagement.
Throughout his career, Prof. Majalija has been recognized with distinguished awards and scholarships, including the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowships. His commitment to academic excellence, research leadership, and community impact positions him as a trailblazer in the field of Veterinary Education and Research Management.
