Overall Responsibility:
The officer will be responsible for leading, coordinating, and executing high-impact, multidisciplinary research initiatives aligned to the Institute’s strategic objectives
Generic Tasks and Responsibilities:
The Generic tasks of the successful candidate will be to:
- Designing and implementing innovative and integrated research projects, experiments and studies based on thematic multi-disciplinary and cross-functional teams.
- Developing grant proposals to secure funding for conducting specific research programs in line with the Institute’s strategic management plan.
- Identifying sources of funding, mobilizing resources and developing proposals for competitive funding especially those that enhance linkages and partnerships.
- Publishing and disseminating scientific research findings in peer reviewed journals, books etc.
- Providing technical leadership, mentorship, supervision and consultation to team members, research officers, professional co-workers, collaborators, students and others attached to the organization.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Mandatory criteria: Applicants must meet the following five criteria.
- Possession of a PhD with the exception of staff in the Engineering Discipline who possess a Master’s degree.
- Having served as Principal Research Officer for at least five (5) years.
- Evidence of having contributed towards development of at least one research development proposals in the last five years totaling to Five Million United States Dollars (US $ 5,000,000).
- Having participated in high quality research resulting in the development of patented, licensed, and/or commercialized new product(s). This shall be evidenced by a patent, license, registration number, or by any other defendable means.
- Having published as first author and/or co-author of at least two articles in a journal(s) with an impact factor > 3.0 in the past five years.
Optional criteria:
Applicants must meet any four of the following criteria.
- Having published at least a chapter in a book with ISBN or ISSN numbers.
- Successful supervision of at least five postgraduate students, with three of the students at PhD level, in the past five years.
- Examination of at least three PhD theses as “Internal/External Examiner” or “Opponent” in the past five years.
- Being a reviewer for at least one peer reviewed Journal.
- Having served as a Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI on an international and/or regional project.
- Direct mentorship and/or supervision of at least ten NARO staff of middle level rank in the past five years.
- Serving or having served as a member of a regional and/or global research board.
- Contribution to development of at least one physical infrastructure and/or equipment for niche analytical capacity.
- Contribution to the development of at least one draft policy, strategy, manual and guideline.

- Should with evidence have conducted high caliber research and published as first author and/or co-author of at least four articles of which two should be in high impact journals (impact factor > 1.5) in the past five years.
Optional criteria: Applicants must meet any four of the following criteria.
- Should have published a book chapter. This shall be evidenced by ISBN, ISSN numbers.
- Should with evidence, in the past five years, have successfully supervised three post-graduate students.
- Should, with evidence, have been appointed to examine at least two post-graduate theses as “Internal/External Examiner” or “Opponent” in the past five years.
- Should, with evidence, have served as a reviewer for at least two peer reviewed Journals and/or grant award scheme.
- Should have served as a Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, or Team Member on an international and/or regional project.
- Should with evidence have directly mentored and/or supervised at least five staff of low ranks in the past five years.
- Should with evidence have caused diffusion /permeation of at least a technology causing reputable impact on livelihoods and economic development in a community.
