In a significant stride towards enhancing global standing in vaccine research and development, the NaLIRRI has put in place management and technical requirements for ISO 17025. The team has established a prudent management structure, regularized personnel trainings and annual management meetings and recently finalized Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Infectious Animal Diseases Laboratory (IADL Lab). This milestone, achieved in February 2024, marks a crucial step in the institute’s journey towards securing international accreditation, aligning with the ISO 17025 general requirements for testing and calibration laboratories.

Dr. Dhikusooka Moses, the Program Leader Vaccinology Program at NaLIRRI, emphasizes the pivotal role of SOPs in the accreditation process. “Before you get accredited, there must be a laboratory quality management system developed,” he explained. “SOPs are one of the key essential areas that auditors assess for compliance with international standards.”

Kabaka Richard, a Laboratory Technician, who is also the Quality manager led the development of the SOPs, and underscored the thoroughness of the procedures. “The SOPs are very thorough,” he remarked. “We followed the recommendations of the standards, ensuring that every aspect of our laboratory operations meets the highest international benchmarks.”

The IADL Lab, renowned for its groundbreaking research in vaccine development, has spearheaded efforts in combating critical livestock challenges for farmers. From the development of anti-tick and Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines to diagnostics services for various diseases such as brucellosis and Newcastle Disease, the laboratory’s contributions have been instrumental in safeguarding animal health and enhancing agricultural productivity.

To navigate the complexities of the accreditation process, NaLIRRI has sought consultancy services. This strategic endeavor aims to provide expert guidance in implementing the roadmap towards accreditation, ensuring that all requirements are met and any identified gaps addressed effectively.

“Accreditation is of great benefit to us,” Dr. Dhikusooka affirmed. “It not only grants us international recognition but also opens doors for international collaborations and funding opportunities. With accreditation, we can assure our stakeholders of our technical competence and commitment to quality.”

NaLIRRI’s pursuit of accreditation aligns with the broader objectives of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), which aims to have four laboratories accredited this year. By adhering to rigorous standards and policies, NaLIRRI seeks to uphold its reputation as a hub of excellence in vaccine research and development, fostering global partnerships and facilitating the exchange of valuable products and services on the international stage.
