Bulindi ZARDI conducted an extensive training session for five extension officers from Kagadi District, focusing on the production and processing of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, along with feed formulation techniques. Held from August 26 to September 6, 2024, this training follows a commitment made by Kagadi district leadership during an earlier exposure visit to Bulindi ZARDI, aimed at promoting innovative agricultural technologies to enhance production and improve local farmers’ livelihoods. BSF larvae have gained recognition for their low cost and high protein content, positioning them an ideal solution for sustainable livestock and aquaculture feed.

Dr. Guma Williams, the Course Coordinator and Animal Health Scientist, said the training has equipped the extension officers with essential skills to educate farmers on effectively integrating BSF production into their agricultural practices. Participants engaged in practical demonstrations, covering various techniques such as setting up BSF production facilities, managing feeding regimes, and harvesting the larvae effectively.

The training also emphasised effective processing techniques and feed formulation strategies for monogastric animals, especially poultry, pigs, and fish, aimed at maximising nutritional benefits while minimising production costs.

The extension officers were thrilled about the potential impact of BSF larvae production in their communities. Mr. Kakande Samuel, an Assistant Animal Husbandry Officer, hailed BSF larvae as a good source of proteins, replacing fish (mukene) and soybean, which are often competed for between humans and poultry. He added: “I’m going to buy the BSF larvae from here [Bulindi ZARDI] to start practicing it and extend the knowledge to my fellow farmers in Kagadi District.”

Dr. Amanya Moses, the Kagadi District Production and Marketing Officer, noted the importance of strong research, extension, and farmer linkages for national transformation. Presiding over the closing ceremony, Dr. Sylvester Dickson Baguma, Director of Bulindi ZARDI, commended the extension officers for their dedication and achievements during the training, awarding them certificates of completion. Bulindi ZARDI is a Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) certified centre. A short video highlighting the training can be viewed via this link
